If you’re in pain or have an emergency situation that’s preventing you from going to work or school, you need same-day attention.
On the other hand, if you have a situation that isn’t interfering with your daily activities but still bothers you, plan to book an appointment at your earliest convenience. In the meantime, be sure to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth to prevent any pressure on that tooth.
Do not attempt to repair any broken dental work. Harsh chemicals or hot temperatures can permanently damage dental prosthetics and cause additional tooth damage. If your restoration feels loose, do not attempt to remove it. Avoid applying any pressure to that area.

If you cannot go about your normal activities, you need to see an emergency dentist. In the meantime, an over-the-counter pain medication may help as well as a cool compress to help reduce swelling. Any fractured or knocked-out teeth should be placed in a sealed container and completely immersed in saline or milk. The more quickly we’re able to see you, the better chance there is to reattach the tooth.
Some of the most frequent dental emergencies we see are related to active infections or cavities that have been left untreated. Unfortunately, tooth decay will often continue to progress if it isn’t intercepted early on. So, what might be a small cavity now could be an abscessed tooth several months later.
